There are thousands of mobile applications that deal in some way with food consumption. From tracking pizzas to tracking calories, from compiling shopping lists to finding recipes for ethnic meals, your mobile device is the quickest way to your stomach.

Mobile devices, smartphones and tablets are part of many American kitchens (let's call them the new digital cookbook) where cooks are learning from mobile apps and watching videos of recipes and techniques as they are preparing meals.

On Wednesday, July 25 at 6 p.m., residents of the Twin Cities area can attend a free event hosted by Verizon Wireless and Mozza Mia restaurant to celebrate the mobile food revolution that includes learning, doing and sharing (register here: http://mozzamia.eventbrite.com/).

Heather Swan, executive chef of Mozza Mia (known for outstanding mozzarella!) will lead a hands-on demonstration (see video below) of making fresh mozzarella. Mozzarella di Bufala is a much richer taste compared to a store bought, pre-packaged product, and it’s easy to make.

In addition to making mozzarella, attendees will share their favorite mobile food apps, discuss how they use them and how those mobile applications have changed the way they consume and shop for food.

Here are a few popular and free mobile applications available on iOS and Android platforms for food lovers, or those looking to be more efficient around meal time:
