Greenville, S.C. — In an effort to help prevent crime in Anderson School District One, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless communications provider, has donated voice mail boxes to Palmetto Middle School, Palmetto High School, Powdersville Middle School, Wren Middle School and Wren High School.

The voice mail boxes have been used to establish school safety hotlines. Students or parents who want to anonymously report information about crimes, threats or suspicious activities may call the school safety hotline and leave a message. The message is then forwarded to a school resource officer's pager.

Students and parents already have used the hotlines to report information. Recently, School Resource Officer Zachary Gregory received an anonymous tip, via the hotline, about a fight that was to take place among some Palmetto High School students. Thanks to the tip, Gregory and fellow officers were able to prevent the fight by arriving early to stake out the area where the fight was to have taken place.

"Anderson School District One appreciates the opportunity to work with Verizon Wireless," said David Havird, assistant superintendent - administration/personnel, Anderson School District One. "We certainly believe school safety hotlines will be very beneficial to our community, particularly to students and staff in our middle and high schools."

"Verizon Wireless is proud to donate voice mail boxes to the middle and high schools in Anderson School District One," said Jerry Fountain, Verizon Wireless' regional president - Carolinas. "Through these donations, we hope to help provide safe learning environments in area schools."

Each school has its own safety hotline number. The safety hotline numbers are as follows: Palmetto Middle School's number is 864-245-0015; Palmetto High School's number is 864-245-0240; Powdersville Middle School and Wren Middle School's number is 864-380-2746; and Wren High School's number is 864-423-3764.
