ROCHESTER, NY — At a news conference today, Verizon Wireless officially dedicated its newly expanded call center in Henrietta. The $3.5 million expansion has created over 300 new jobs in the Rochester area this year and improved customer service for Verizon Wireless customers across the Northeast.

The expansion is part of a three-year, $100 million national call center improvement plan announced by the wireless carrier in February. The first phase has grown the Rochester call center's staff to nearly 400 employees today. Verizon Wireless estimates further growth by the end of 2001.

"Verizon Wireless is committed to delivering superior service to our customers, and to growing our business," said Tracy Nolan, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York Region. "A key component of that growth is our continued commitment to Upstate New York. Rochester and Monroe County have provided us with an excellent market in which to expand, as well as a pool of high-quality employees who will help us drive that growth.

"At a time when many local employers are scaling back their operations, we're very excited to be bringing hundreds of new jobs to Monroe County."

The expansion will allow the Rochester call center to handle nearly twice as many calls from customers as it does today.

Verizon Wireless has more than 28 million customers nationwide. According to industry analysts, nearly 40 percent of Americans are wireless customers, with a new subscriber signing up for service every two seconds. In addition to the call center expansion, Verizon Wireless recently announced it will invest more than $100 million this year in its Upstate New York wireless network. This is part of the company's nationwide $4 billion network investment program in 2001 to offer the most extensive wireless network in the U.S.

"Our customers have come to expect a reliable nationwide network and quality customer service. We are dedicated to continuing to provide exactly that," says Nolan.
