MILWAUKEE, WI — The Milwaukee Bucks will put a full-court press on domestic violence this season through a series of special promotional and educational events sponsored by Verizon Wireless.

Throughout the course of the 2001-2002 National Basketball Association season, a public service announcement will be shown during the Milwaukee Bucks game broadcasts to increase awareness of domestic abuse and let people in Milwaukee and Wisconsin know how to find help. The announcement, featuring Milwaukee Bucks Assistant Coach Terry Stotts and his wife Jan, will appear during all Bucks games this season that are televised on WCGV, Channel 24.

Verizon Wireless will also team with the Bucks in conducting for area business leaders an event that addresses the business implications of domestic violence. Additionally, the Bucks will host a special Domestic Violence Awareness night in connection with their March 8 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The first 5,000 fans at the game will receive a special flashlight key chain, provided by Verizon Wireless.

Other aspects of the community awareness campaign will include:

  • A holiday party on December 29, 2001, hosted by Verizon Wireless and the Bucks for children who are victims of domestic violence.
  • A "Bucks ticket bank" for use by local agencies and shelters dealing with domestic violence issues. The domestic violence awareness program with the Milwaukee Bucks stems from Verizon Wireless' ongoing commitment to support domestic violence prevention and awareness initiatives on a regional and national basis, as well as the company's position as "The Official Wireless Provider" for the team. In the past year, the company has provided more than 300 emergency phones for domestic violence shelters and organizations throughout Wisconsin. Verizon Wireless has also provided the local business community with posters that help build awareness in the workplace for ways to detect and prevent domestic violence.

"Domestic violence is a disturbing national and local issue that must be addressed with heightened awareness of its ruinous effects on individuals, families and businesses," said John Steinmiller, Vice President of Business Operations for the Milwaukee Bucks. We're pleased to join in with Verizon Wireless in working to reduce its local impact."

"We're pleased to be able to expand our association with the Bucks to launch this important initiative to fight domestic abuse," said Tracy Nolan, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "With the Bucks' high-profile standing in this community, we believe we'll be able to reach a vast audience. Our hope is that this program will encourage people—both victims and those who know victims—to talk about the issue of domestic violence and bring about positive change."
