IRVINE, CA — As part of Verizon Wireless' ongoing commitment to support programs designed to curb domestic violence in the U.S., the company has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Ventura County Elder Abuse Council, an organization that works to end abuse of the elderly in that County. The grant will help fund production of educational materials for the elderly of Ventura County, and an elder abuse public service announcement video.

"We focus our efforts on the elderly, their caregivers, and the public at large," said Heather Frankle, past chairperson for the Ventura County Elder Abuse Council. "The Verizon Wireless grant will help us prevent ongoing abuse and raise awareness of this critical issue through advocacy, education, training, public awareness and coordination of services."

"According to the U.S. Department of Justice, there are nearly one million incidents of domestic violence each year," said Greg Klimek, Verizon Wireless' Southern California regional president. "And, the victims are not only children and adults, but our senior citizens too. Ending domestic violence in our community is a top priority for Verizon Wireless and we are committed to helping organizations like the Ventura County Elder Abuse Council that directly serve victims of abuse."

Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless service provider, works with domestic violence prevention agencies throughout the country to help reduce the incidence of spousal abuse. The company, which has adopted this issue as its primary area of philanthropy, awarded more than $400,000 in grants to agencies addressing domestic violence in the 12 western this year.

In addition, Verizon Wireless West Area has supported the donation of more than 1200 phones to domestic violence agencies, distributed more than 700 posters to businesses to help raise awareness of the issue, and collected thousands of used phones to benefit victims of domestic violence.
