IRVINE, CA — The Verizon Wireless network in the central coast of California continues processing calls, handling up to a 600% surge in call volume. In preparation of emergencies that impact electricity service, the company's cell sites in the area have been equipped with either generators or battery backups, helping ensure that they continue to provide service. Two Verizon Wireless retail store locations were affected by the earthquake, losing electricity because of a power outage. One, located in San Luis Obispo, was closed temporarily but has reopened. The other, located in Santa Maria, remains closed.
