MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Verizon Wireless is encouraging Minnesotans to help domestic violence survivors and commemorate Earth Day at the same time by donating their no-longer-used wireless phones at the company's local Communications Stores this April. In the Twin Cities, residents can donate handsets at any of the Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and kiosk locations.
"An old wireless phone can become a lifeline, rather than trash headed for a landfill, if Minnesotans make donations to Verizon Wireless' HopeLineSM recycling program," said Viki L. Radden, president Verizon Wireless' Great Plains Region.
Through its award-winning HopeLine program, the company collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider. Most of the phones and equipment are refurbished and sold; then Verizon Wireless uses the proceeds to purchase newer wireless phones for domestic violence survivors and to support domestic violence shelters and organizations. The remaining phones are recycled in an environmentally friendly way.
"Our program has provided many domestic violence survivors with a lifeline that has helped them go about their day-to-day lives with less fear," said Radden. "The program also offers an alternative to just throwing handsets away. Earth Day is a nice reminder to all of us to pull those unused wireless phones off the dusty shelves and out of the junk drawers so they can be put to good use."
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 but Verizon Wireless Communications Stores accept donations year-round. Recycling a phone is also tax deductible through HopeLine.
Since January 2001, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 1.2 million used wireless phones for the benefit of domestic violence victims and advocacy groups across the country. For more information, call 1-800-426-2790 or visit the Web at http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
