IRVINE, CA — Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, today announced a Top Five Travel Tips list for wireless consumers headed for summer getaways. "Wireless phones can be a handy tool while on vacation, and with a little thought before departure, they can help eliminate worries while away from home," said Marni Walden, president of the company's Southern California Region. Walden suggested these tips:

  • Check your unused minutes daily …for free! By dialing #BAL (#225) on their wireless phone for free, Verizon Wireless customers can get an estimate of how many minutes they've used, minutes currently available to use and details about recent payments.
  • Fit in with the locals by not standing out. By keeping your voice low while talking on your cell phone you'll avoid stares from the locals --- and don't worry, most phones have powerful microphones that can pick up whispers, so you'll be heard easily on the other end.
  • Consider roadside assistance for peace of mind. Roadside assistance through Verizon Wireless follows your cell phone wherever you take it --- and the coverage, for $2.99 per month, includes towing, lockout service, mechanical adjustments, tire service, car battery boosts and other useful services.
  • Don't get caught with a dead battery. Have an extra battery on hand just in case — and use special "travel chargers" designed with vacations in mind. These lightweight, compact chargers fit in small spaces and help you keep your battery charged.
  • Insure your phone or PDA against being lost or stolen. Verizon Wireless customers can purchase insurance to have their phone or PDA replaced if its lost, stolen or accidentally damaged. This service is provided by a third-party licensed insurance company to Verizon Wireless customers and costs less than $5 per month.
