Verizon Wireless technicians in Texas and Louisiana continue to actively work to restore service to impacted sites and to restore network capacity in areas where residents and rescue workers must rely on wireless communications in the wake of both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

Texas

  • Wireless service to Galveston has been completed restored.
  • Only a small number of cell sites in Houston remain out of service.
  • Over 90% of the network has been restored in the Beaumont and Lake Charles areas.
  • Service has been largely restored in the Lufkin and Jasper, TX areas north of Beaumont.

Louisiana

  • The areas west of Metairie including Hammond, Houma and Kenner are operating normally.
  • The areas north of Lake Pontchatrain including the cities of Slidell, Mandeville, Lacombe and Covington, have good continuous coverage.
  • Service is operating normally at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. A
  •  COW (Cell on Wheels) has been deployed to St. Gabriel to help boost coverage.
  • Service in the French Quarter continues to strengthen; however, the still submerged East / Northeast New Orleans areas are still experiencing limited coverage.

Mississippi

  • The Mississippi Gulf Coast has most sites up and good continuous coverage.
  • Verizon Wireless' cell site is operational on the roof of the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino in Biloxi - the site of FEMA's base of operations in the area.
  • Verizon Wireless' cell site is operational at the Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport, a major base of operations for the National Guard.
  • The Jackson area has normal coverage with no sites down.

Alabama

  • The Alabama Gulf Coast area is operating normally.

Florida

  • The Florida Gulf Coast area is operating normally.
