BEDMINSTER, NJ — Verizon Wireless, the nation's most reliable wireless service provider, is also one of the nation's healthiest companies. The Wellness Councils of America recently awarded Verizon Wireless with a Gold Well Workplace award as part of its America's Healthiest Companies program, which recognizes quality and excellence in worksite health promotion.

Verizon Wireless was given this honor in recognition of its commitment to provide resources to its 52,000 employees to help them improve their health and well-being. Verizon Wireless currently operates 20 on-site fitness centers and employs a full-time staff dedicated to the health and wellness of employees. For $15 a month, employees have access to top of the line fitness equipment, health programs and seminars, smoking cessation classes, health fairs and screenings, flu shots and much more. Additionally, employees receive three "Quality at Work" messages per week, with motivational messages, and health and wellness information.

Companies participate in a lengthy application process for Well Workplace awards and are measured against national standards set by the Wellness Councils throughout the country. Companies are judged based on seven benchmarks: Capturing on senior level support; Creating cohesive wellness teams; Collecting data to drive health efforts; Crafting an operating plan; Choosing appropriate interventions; Creating a supportive environment; and Consistently evaluating outcomes. This year, Verizon Wireless was one of only 19 companies awarded the Gold Well Workplace award.

The Well Workplace recognition is one of many Verizon Wireless has received this year. Recent awards include:

  • "InformationWeek 500" - InformationWeek Magazine
  • "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" - Working Mother Magazine
  • "Best Diversity Campaign in 2004" - Employment Management Association
  • "Best Wireless Company to Work For" - TelecomCareers.Net JobSeeker Survey
