MORRISTOWN, NJ — Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has activated a new switch in Wayne to handle the growing number of wireless calls in Northern New Jersey. The new switch, the second in the Wayne facility, is part of a multi-billion dollar investment the company is making to its nationwide wireless network in 2005 to update technology, improve call quality and offer a variety of advanced services such as wireless broadband.

The new switch serves wireless customers who live in and travel through Sussex, Passaic and Morris counties. Staffed by a small team of network managers and technicians, the switch is the second to open in the area this year.

Like all Verizon Wireless switching offices, the facility is equipped with a back-up generator that keeps the call routing hub in operation in the event of a power failure or other service interruption.

"This switch is another huge investment to better serve our customers," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro area. "Verizon Wireless has invested more than $5 billion on the build-out and enhancement of our national network since the beginning of this year, including $600 million for the deployment of our nationwide broadband EV-DO network. Ongoing investment in the network through new switches, cell sites and wireless data technology ensures that we will continue to provide the high quality service customers expect today and in the future."

Hand said the company's BroadbandAccess data network is the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the U.S. BroadbandAccess service, now available in much of New Jersey and to more than 140 million Americans in 171 major metropolitan markets, provides customers with high-speed Internet access, access to corporate intranets and traditional e-mail functionality via laptop computers and personal digital assistants.

The company's new V CAST service, which brings crystal clear short content on-demand, 3D games and music videos to wireless phones from leading and respected news and entertainment sources and other innovative content providers, runs on the Verizon Wireless EV-DO 3G network.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the third quarter as the company added 1.9 million net new customers.. Verizon Wireless now serves 49.3 million customers nationwide.
