BOSTON and DENVER — With the umpire ready to shout "Play ball!," Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, is ready for all the action. Verizon Wireless works year-round to expand coverage, increase capacity and strengthen the quality of its wireless network to ensure it is the MVP when it comes to handling the increased call volumes that occur around special events, including baseball's biggest games.

In Boston, Verizon Wireless has increased its network capacity by activating a temporary cell site at Fenway Park. The Cell on Wheels (or COW) is a mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity - allowing more customers to concurrently place calls, exchange text and picture messages, and download multimedia content. More than 260,000 text messages were exchanged around Fenway during the October 12 game.

During the recent big games in Denver, Verizon Wireless experienced up to 12 times the usual call volume on its downtown area network. To make sure the network remains game-ready in the Mile High City, the company has added two new cell sites earlier this year to improve coverage and capacity along the 16th Street Mall and near the Pepsi Center sports complex; augmented capacity to existing sites that serve Coors Field and the surrounding area; and enhanced in-building coverage at several hotels in the downtown area for visiting baseball fans and customers.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $40 billion since it was formed — more than $5 billion on average every year — to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. In 2006 the company invested $6.6 billion, and in the first six months of this year has invested $3.4 billion.
