ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Lobo fans can help curb domestic violence and electronic waste in our community.
Fans attending the University of New Mexico women's basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 23 against Utah can donate their used wireless phones, batteries and accessories to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program. Drop boxes will be located at the northeast entrance of The Pit beginning at noon, one hour prior to the 1 p.m. tip-off.
Through the HopeLine program, used wireless phones and accessories from any service provider are recycled or refurbished for re-use.
"We are pleased to be a part of this wonderful program," said Lobo Head Coach Don Flanagan. "HopeLine provides a great service to victims of domestic violence."
"This is a win-win for not only the environment, but also for victims of domestic violence right here in our state," said Tony Heyman, regional president, Verizon Wireless.
"Thanks to the community's support for HopeLine, we awarded more than $30,000 in grants and donated 200 phones with 600,000 free minutes to domestic violence agencies in New Mexico last year."
Since the program began, the company has disposed of more than 1 million phones in an environmentally sound way and awarded nearly $5 million in cash donations to domestic violence organizations nationwide.
The company has also distributed more than 60,000 HopeLine phones with the equivalent of 160 million minutes of service and other features for use by survivors and organizations.
Wireless phones and equipment can be donated to the HopeLine program year-round at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store across the country.
