What:
In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service, Verizon Wireless is expanding its network capacity during Hoopfest — the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the country — by deploying a temporary mobile site called a COLT (Cell on Light Truck). There are 175,000 people expected to attend the weekend outdoor festival.

A COLT is a self-contained mobile cell site designed specifically for rapid and short-term network response. It enhances wireless coverage so that Verizon Wireless customers can make more calls; send more text and picture messages; and download games, music and sports news.

When:
COLT deployed June 26, 2008.

Where:
The COLT is located in Riverfront Park.

Why:
Verizon Wireless uses mobile cell sites to enhance its network when there is a natural disaster or other event that calls for additional cell coverage and capacity. So far this year, Verizon Wireless has deployed mobile cell sites and other equipment to more than a dozen emergencies around the country as well as many special events.

Network Investment:
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $106 million in its Washington network in 2007 and more than $730 million over the past seven years.

Reliability:
In addition to its fleet of mobile equipment, Verizon Wireless' nationwide network reliability is supported by industry-leading redundancy and maintenance measures. This has proven particularly valuable during natural disasters and other emergencies.

Standard Verizon Wireless network-reliability features include battery back-up power at all facilities as well as generators installed at all switching facilities and many cell site locations.

B-Roll:
