BASKING RIDGE, NJ — At a Congressional hearing called today by U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, expert witnesses extolled consumer benefits about the importance of prohibiting new discriminatory wireless taxes from being imposed. H.R. 5793, the Cell Tax Fairness Act of 2008, calls for a five-year moratorium from any new discriminatory wireless taxes.

Steve Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel at Verizon Wireless, made the following statement after today’s hearing:

“As more than 130 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives have come to realize, it is increasingly important to take a ‘time-out’ from adding to the unfairly high burden on wireless customers, both individuals and businesses. On behalf of nearly 70 million customers throughout the nation, Verizon Wireless urges quick consideration of H.R. 5793 by the full House.

“I thank Committee Chair Linda Sanchez for her leadership in bringing this important issue to the forefront. We certainly appreciate Reps. Lofgren and Cannon for offering this important consumer measure, as well as Sen. Wyden and Sen. Snowe, who have introduced similar legislation now being considered by the U.S. Senate.

“More than ever, American consumers and businesses can benefit from the five-year moratorium on new wireless taxes proposed in the Cell Tax Fairness Act of 2008. Verizon Wireless wholeheartedly endorses this legislation, and we encourage its quick adoption by the Congress.”
