MILWAUKEE, WI — Domestic violence survivors in Milwaukee County will benefit from a $5,000 donation made by Verizon Wireless to the Sojourner Family Peace Center, one of the area’s leading domestic violence prevention and education centers.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, there were 29,769 domestic abuse incidents reported in Wisconsin in 2008, the most recent available statistic. The HopeLine® grant will help fund support services provided by the Sojourner Family Peace Center, which serves Milwaukee County.
“Domestic violence is a pervasive and often silent issue that affects more than 30 percent of American women during their lifetime,” said T.J. Fox, president, Wisconsin/Illinois region, Verizon Wireless, in presenting the check to the Sojourner Family Peace Center at a company meeting held in Milwaukee, Wis. “Verizon Wireless recognizes the role we can play in helping organizations like the Sojourner Family Peace Center work to put an end to this destructive force and to provide assistance to victims of domestic abuse.”
“Verizon Wireless is a valued community partner,” said Angela Mancuso, executive director of the Sojourner Family Peace Center. “This grant is an investment in our efforts to break the cycle of domestic violence in our community. The funding will help us continue to provide critical support to those who desperately need our help.”
Through its award-winning HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless turns no-longer-used wireless phones into support for victims of domestic violence. Wireless phones, batteries and other accessories are collected at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide and in special collections throughout the year. The phones are either refurbished for reuse or recycled in an environmentally sound way.
Since 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 8 million wireless phones, awarded more than $10 million in cash grants to domestic violence organizations throughout the country and has distributed more than 106,000 phones with the equivalent of more than 300 million minutes of free wireless service to be used by victims of domestic violence.
