CROWN POINT, IN — Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site in Crown Point, which improves voice and data coverage north of downtown. Coverage will also be improved for residents near Collins Park and for visitors traveling along Broadway Street between U.S. Highway 30 and East Joliet Street.
The new cell site, which is equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, empowers more Verizon Wireless customers to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging email and text, picture and video messaging as well as making calls.
“Verizon Wireless continues to invest in its network in Indiana to meet the growing demands for data usage and calls by customers around the state,” said T.J. Fox, region president, Verizon Wireless.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed – $6 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $1.15 billion on improvements to its wireless network in Indiana.
In addition to the ongoing investment in its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has also been launching the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE). Since its initial launch, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
In Indiana, 4G LTE has been launched in and around the Indianapolis International Airport, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway just in time for the month’s racing events, and in Lafayette and West Lafayette. The cities of Indianapolis and Fort Wayne will be added by June 16.
By year-end 2013, Verizon Wireless will have full nationwide 4G LTE coverage everywhere the Verizon 3G network is available today.
