BIRMINGHAM, AL — Earlier today at a Domestic Violence Prayer Breakfast hosted by the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Birmingham Police Department, sponsor Verizon Wireless announced the establishment of the “Sergeant James Jackson Domestic Violence Advocacy Award.” The annual award, which will be accompanied by a $2,000 Verizon HopeLine grant, will be given to a non-profit organization dedicated to domestic violence awareness and prevention chosen by Sergeant Jackson, supervisor of BPD’s Special Victims Unit, each October in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Verizon Wireless works with non-profit organizations and law enforcement across the country with the shared goal of eradicating domestic violence, and Sergeant Jackson has risen to the top as someone whose deep and longstanding commitment to victims as well as to bringing offenders to justice deserves special recognition,” said Monica Pate, business sales manager for Verizon Wireless, who presented the award. “Knowing his passion for the cause, we felt that the most impactful way to recognize Sergeant Jackson for his tireless work was to contribute to organizations he sees as shining examples of those serving and advocating for victims.”
To celebrate the inaugural award, Verizon Wireless also presented the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence with a $20,000 HopeLine grant to be shared amongst the coalition’s member organizations. ACADV is an umbrella organization that includes 18 domestic violence shelters across the state.
Exclusive to Verizon, HopeLine puts the company’s technology and the nation’s most reliable network to work in communities by turning no-longer-used wireless phones into support for victims of domestic violence and helps protect the environment by disposing of wireless phones in an environmentally sound way. Wireless phones given to HopeLine are refurbished and sold for reuse, generating proceeds for the program. HopeLine donates cash grants to non-profit organizations to help fund education programs, support services and community outreach. In addition, refurbished phones – complete with 3,000 minutes of wireless service – are provided to local domestic violence organizations or local government and law enforcement agencies for use with domestic violence victims.
