PORTLAND, ME — Verizon Wireless announced today it will introduce the nation’s largest 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Portland, and more than 20 additional communities throughout Maine, on Thursday, June 21.

Verizon Wireless customers with compatible 4G LTE smartphones, modems, tablets and mobile hotspots will be able to wirelessly share music and photos, surf the Web, and download files up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G networks.

Verizon Wireless’ new 4G LTE network initially will be available in the following cities and towns across Vacationland:

  • Arundel
  • Biddeford
  • Cape Elizabeth
  • Cumberland
  • Falmouth
  • Freeport
  • Gray
  • Kennebunk
  • Kennebunkport
  • Kittery
  • New Gloucester
  • North Yarmouth
  • Ogunquit
  • Old Orchard Beach
  • Portland
  • Saco
  • Scarborough
  • South Portland
  • Wells
  • Westbrook
  • Yarmouth
  • York

“Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will offer tremendous opportunity to Maine residents and businesses to better connect and innovate,” said Christine Berberich, New England Region President for Verizon Wireless. “As New England’s wireless leader, we continue to invest in and expand our 4G LTE coverage across the region and look forward to bringing these communities on board Thursday.”

HomeFusion
Residents in the newly expanded 4G LTE coverage area in Maine will also have access to HomeFusion Broadband, a new in-home, high-speed Internet service for consumers who want residential broadband with reliable data connectivity. Verizon Wireless’ high-speed 4G LTE network is delivered to a cylinder-shaped antenna, professionally installed outside a customer’s home, which then relays the signal to an in-home broadband router and allows the customer to connect up to four wired and at least 20 wireless (WiFi) devices in the household. HomeFusion launched May 3 nationally in markets where Verizon’s 4G LTE network is available.

4G LTE Devices and Plans
Verizon Wireless customers can purchase a variety of 4G LTE-enabled devices including netbooks, hotspots, modems, smartphones and tablets, to connect to the largest 4G LTE network in the nation. Details on devices can be found at www.verizonwireless.com/4GLTE and information on plans and pricing is available at www.verizonwireless.com/plans.

4G LTE Coverage and Speed
In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, 4G LTE devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is the most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their city, or when they travel to an area already covered by 4G LTE. HomeFusion Broadband is a data-only 4G LTE service, and cannot be used on the 3G Network.
