In December 2010, Lt. Col. John Shaw was on military leave, thousands of miles from his family and friends during the holiday season. One afternoon, he received a care package from his colleagues at Verizon Wireless that brightened his day. This token of kindness was just one of the reasons Lt. Col. Shaw nominated his employer for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest award given by the U.S. Government to employers for exceptional support of Guard and Reserve service.
Verizon Wireless received this prestigious award yesterday in Washington, D.C., presented by the Secretary of Defense for providing exceptional service to members of the military through employment benefits and support. The award was launched in 1996 under the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which serves to maintain and reward employer support for Guard and Reserve services.
In 2011, Verizon Wireless hired more than 300 veterans, adding to the more than 4,000 employed in total. Verizon Wireless’ deep commitment to military employees is evident through a comprehensive Emergency Military Leave policy, personal outreach through care packages sent to the field and widespread internal recognition throughout the company.
