CLEVELAND, OH — Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has led the wireless sector in supporting laws to eliminate driver distractions. Now that many states, including Ohio, have passed laws to make texting while driving illegal, Verizon Wireless is continuing its effort to raise awareness and encourage safety behind the wheel.
Starting in select stores this Friday, including the Mentor location on Mentor Avenue and Strongsville location on Royalton Road, Verizon Wireless will encourage drivers to take the “Don’t Text & Drive” pledge. Those who sign a pledge card at participating Verizon Wireless stores will receive a vehicle cling that reads “Please don’t text and drive” as a reminder to focus on the road while driving.
“Verizon Wireless was the first carrier to underscore the importance of responsible driving while using wireless devices,” said Mark Frazier, president–Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. “With more states outlawing texting while driving, we are reminded that when behind the wheel, safe driving is our number one priority. Verizon wants you to get home safely, so please don't text and drive.”
The campaign is aimed at drivers of all ages but particularly focuses on educating teens on the dangers of texting while driving. In fact, eight Ohio schools stand to benefit from the “Don’t Text & Drive” pledge contest.
Broken into two brackets, eight Verizon Wireless stores throughout Ohio are competing in the pledge contest. The Mentor and Strongsville locations are competing, not only against each other, but also against the Boardman and Mansfield locations. The two Verizon Wireless stores, of those listed below, with the most pledge cards signed throughout the five-week contest will win $2,000 for their local high school from Verizon Wireless, while $500 each will be given to the other two schools just for taking part in the challenge. Each store will donate its winnings to its respective high school in its community.
