For years, people have said they don’t leave their house without their keys, their wallets and their cell phones – the holy trinity of what a person needs to make it through the day.

But, in reality, a cashless society is getting closer. Tossing coins in the toll basket on the highway is a thing of the past, and people get restless when someone at the grocery store counts out dollar bills instead of quickly swiping a credit card through the payment machine.

Wireless technology, specifically near field communications or NFC, is making it possible for merchants, banks, developers and wireless providers to bring two of those necessities – the wallet and the cell phone - together.

Softcard*, a joint venture among Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile, is doing just that. On Monday, Oct. 22, customers in Salt Lake City and Austin will be able to download the Softcard Mobile Wallet from Google Play to the DROID Incredible 4G LTE by HTC, visit stores in Austin and Salt Lake City to get a new SIM card, then add their credit, debit and loyalty cards into the Wallet and begin using it at many retailers in both cities. Softcard Mobile Wallet will be available on the DROID RAZR HD by Motorola and DROID RAZR MAXX HD by Motorola this week.

*UPDATE: Google and Softcard have completed an agreement that will leverage the best technology from both companies to create a more robust mobile wallet for consumers. The mobile payment system will keep the Google Wallet name. Read more here.
