When Dexter Walker started singing at the age of five, he had no idea where his journey would take him. As the founder and leader of the Dexter Walker & Zion Movement choir, he has helped his 90-member choir create a unique gospel music sound that inspires others. Their creative approach to gospel music and stage presence helped them win Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound gospel music competition. As the grand-prize winner, the choir received a How Sweet the Sound recording contract, $25,000, smartphones and gifts cards from Verizon.

Choirs from across the nation competed for the title “America’s Best Gospel Choir” as part of Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound gospel music competition. In its fifth year, How Sweet the Sound provides church and community-based gospel choirs the chance to share their talent with a broader community and perform in front of gospel greats.

Regional winners included: St. Mark Sanctuary Choir (Dallas Regional Winner and National Runner Up); Atlanta West Pentecostal Church (Atlanta Regional Winner); 4 the Caz of Christ (Washington, D.C. Regional Winner); Power in Praise Mass Choir (Newark Regional Winner); The Apostolic Church Sanctuary Choir (Detroit Regional Winner); and DaNell Daymon & the Greater Works Chorale (Los Angeles Regional Winner).

You can watch special performances from Dexter Walker & Zion and the regional winning choirs, CeCe Winans, Hezekiah Walker, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary and Fred Hammond on the one-hour special hosted by Yolanda Adams and Donald Lawrence that will air later this month on TVOne. During the television special, the public will have the opportunity to text their vote for their favorite choir to select the winner of the Verizon People’s Choice Award.
