Job statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce show that growth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs has been three times as fast as that of non-STEM opportunities during the past 10 years.

To help support STEM education, the Verizon Foundation recently announced grants for several programs in the Central Texas region. In total, $85,000 was donated to enrich student learning in STEM subjects in elementary school, high school and college. It is one of the foundation’s missions to enrich students’ day-to-day studies and successfully prepare them for a career in STEM.

Grapevine/Colleyville ISD, serving the neighboring cities of Grapevine and Colleyville, Texas, received a $10,000 grant to support the creation of a STEM academy at one of its elementary schools. The academy includes an engineering section and features a student media lab equipped with laptops.

Killough High School in Lewisville, Texas, received a $50,000 grant. As one of 12 Verizon Innovative Learning Schools in the U.S., Killough High provide teachers with training from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), which helps educators more effectively and innovatively use technology in the classroom.

On the higher education front, the foundation provided $25,000 in grants to Tarrant County College and Weatherford College. These grants will support programs designed to prepare high school seniors for college by providing them with information and resources on STEM-related careers.

Through grants and programs fostering STEM studies and careers in the classroom, the next group of scientists, engineers and mathematicians will be well prepared.
