Actor Morris Chestnut served as host at last month’s Potential of Us 5K Run/Walk in the Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles. The event, which attracted more than 700 runners, was part of Verizon’s Potential of Us initiative, which focused on inspiring the public to give back and tap into their own potential to build stronger communities. The Los Angeles event was specifically focused on encouraging health and fitness in local communities.

“The Potential of Us campaign is important to me because it's a movement,” said Chestnut. “It's a movement that celebrates the community. It inspires the community to get healthy. It inspires the community to reach their full potential.”

Other Potential of Us events were hosted throughout the U.S. by actors Lance GrossRegina Hall and Keke Palmer.

“We see Potential of Us as a rallying cry, an opportunity to engage the members of the community to do things that are going to empower and improve the community,” said Kim Collins, Verizon’s director of multicultural marketing.

Verizon co-hosted the 5K with Black Girls Run!, an organization founded by Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community.

“We are both showing people … that they can do amazing things in their lives,” Hicks said. “[People] can go a lot farther then they think that they can. They can also inspire their communities to do the same thing.”

In addition to an onsite farmer’s market, Verizon Wireless hosted a pop-up store at the event.  Event participants tested the latest in wearable fitness gear, including the Fitbit Zip wireless activity tracker, which monitors a user’s number of steps, distance walked or run, and calories burned.
