UPDATE 6/9/2014: Throughout New York City’s five SAFE Disposal Events this spring, 627 pounds of used cell phones were collected and donated to HopeLine, keeping those devices out of landfills and benefitting domestic violence survivors throughout the country.

4/29/2014: Did you know that 80 to 85 percent of electronic products are discarded in landfills or incinerators, which can release certain toxins into the air? In fact, according to DoSomething.org, e-waste represents just 2 percent of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70 percent of overall toxic waste.

In an effort to encourage safe disposal of potentially harmful electronics and other household products, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will host its annual SAFE Disposal Events throughout April and May. HopeLine from Verizon has once again partnered with DSNY to recycle all cellphones collected at the events.

With collection sites in each borough, the SAFE Disposal Events will provide NYC residents with a one-stop method to safely dispose of potentially harmful used household products, including automotive products, personal care items, housewares and electronics. Materials collected during the events will be recycled, blended for fuel, or sent to licensed hazardous waste treatment facilities.

All cellphones collected during the events will be donated to HopeLine, which connects survivors of domestic violence to vital resources and funds organizations nationwide, while also protecting the environment. Since 2001, the HopeLine program has given more than $21 million in cash grants to domestic violence organizations nationwide, recycled more than 2.4 million wireless phones and kept more than 290 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills. Locally, Verizon Wireless has been a long-time partner of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, having donated nearly $140,000 in HopeLine grants since 2005 to support domestic violence prevention programs.
