On Saturday April 11 Verizon Wireless kicked off the official grand opening weekend of its new 8,000 square foot Boston Destination Store at 745 Boylston Street.

During an early morning ribbon-cutting ceremony the company honored several local winners of the 2014 Verizon Powerful Answers Award - a multi-million dollar challenge for entrepreneurs, companies and innovators worldwide to provide new technology solutions to some of the globe’s biggest problems.

Christine Berberich, President of Verizon Wireless’ New England Region, presented a total of $1.5 million to innovators Aldatu Biosciences ($250,000), School Yourself ($250,000) and Vaxess Technologies ($1,000,000). Additionally, through its HopeLine program, Verizon donated $75,000 to Casa Myrna, a Boston-based non-profit dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence as well as support for survivors and their families.

Boston’s own actor and musician Donnie Wahlberg, as well as social media phenomenon Jack & Jack, made red carpet arrivals and joined television and radio personalities Billy Costa, Joe Public and DJ Crykit in making surprise appearances and engaging with fans that had won meet-and-greets.

Throughout the day guests toured the store’s interactive “Lifestyle Zones” featuring wireless products and smart accessories across categories spanning fitness, music, home security and mobile business solutions. Visitors also trialed DJ equipment, a spin bike and a ‘Selfie Booth’ – just a few of the unique design elements that Verizon incorporated into its newest Destination Store – the fourth in the country and first on the East Coast.

On Sunday, Boston baseball legend and Hall-of Fame left fielder Jim Rice stopped by to meet fans, snap photos and sign autographs – wrapping up two festive and sun-filled days in the Back Bay.
