Are you getting the most from your internet?

Whether you’re downloading music, streaming tv and movies, gaming, uploading photos to share on social media sites or video chatting with family across the country, your internet speed can make or break your online experience.

Quite simply, most of us rely on the Internet as a part of our everyday activities, and a fast internet connection connects you to what you want…when you want. Chances are you’ve already been frustrated more than once as your streaming video or music gets interrupted by an excruciatingly slow buffering process.

It’s time to check your internet speed to make sure your current internet plan meets your online needs.

What’s Slowing My Internet Speed?

Woman on laptop

There’s a good chance that you’re using the
internet for activities that require high-bandwidth
capabilities and demand faster speeds, both for
downloads (the time it takes data to move from
a server to your computer) and uploads (how
long it takes information to travel from your
computer back to a server). If so,
there are several reasons
your internet may not be
as fast as you need, including:

  • Bandwidth capability from your current provider plan
  • Ineffective hardware, such as an outdated router

Multiple Devices = Increased Demand

If you don’t have an internet plan that offers enough bandwidth, using multiple devices simultaneously can dramatically slow down your connection speed.

Almost all of today’s wired homes have several devices, such as tablets, TVs and laptops, downloading content simultaneously through the same modem via a wireless router. When all of those Mbps’ (the measure for your data transfer speed) are being routed in several directions, speeds can be significantly reduced. What is Mbps?

Getting the “Right” Internet Speed

To get started, you’ll first need to determine your current internet speed – use Verizon’s free Speed Test tool to check your network’s upload and download speed now.

Since speeds can vary based on peak time and usage, to get the most accurate reading, it’s a good idea to check your speed on three separate occasions and then average out the results.

Also, keep in mind that speeds advertised are usually “best case” scenarios, and may be affected based on time of day, the number of people sharing your connection, Internet traffic, and other variables. Once you’ve gotten a sense of what speed you’re currently using, you’ll be in a better position to determine what plan your family needs.

Talk to Other Internet Users

A good source for reliable recommendations is within your immediate circle of contacts. If Verizon FiOS® is available in your area why not ask your friends and neighbors who use it how its speed and reliability compares to cable or DSL?

Verizon FiOS offers a variety of packages to suit every need, from basic Internet service to FiOS Quantum Internet, with blazing-fast speeds of up to 500/500 Mbps that leave cable in the dust. And, as a PC Magazine Readers’ Choice Award winner 9 years in a row, Verizon FiOS Internet is America’s top-rated Internet service1…that’s fast enough to download your favorite two-hour HD movies (5 GB in size) in less than 1.4 minutes each.2

Staying Well-Connected Today…and Tomorrow

Choosing the Internet plan that’s right for your family is an important decision, and one that you’ll no doubt want to re-evaluate periodically. While keeping up with ever-changing technology can be challenging, Verizon can provide expert advice and deliver state-of-the-art communication solutions.

Three Ways Verizon Can Speed Up Your Connection

1. Faster speeds with fiber optics

It starts with the technology.

As the next-generation technology for high-bandwidth files, FiOS® Internet is built on 100% fiber-optics, which offers a reliable connection at speeds that cable can’t touch.

And Verizon Quantum speeds go all the way up to 500 Mbps in some areas, offering unreal speeds to upload large movie files and other high-bandwidth files in seconds.

2. Increased upload speeds with SpeedMatchSM

Only Verizon offers SpeedMatch, which provides equal upload and download speeds.

Upload speeds are important in order to get the most value possible from your Internet connection.

With matching upload speed, you can connect to video chats and share your favorite HD movies, videos and pictures on social media quickly and easily.

3. In-home WiFi speeds with the FiOS Quantum router

You can boost speeds even more by using a cutting-edge router like the Verizon FiOS QuantumTM Gateway.

It’s capable of speeds up to 800 Mbps for faster surfing, streaming and gaming, with a range of up to 325 feet in and around your home.*

That means your family will be able to use multiple devices even during peak usage times--without battling for bandwidth.
