Responsibilities

Verizon is seeking a highly motivated and talented senior network security engineer with expertise in networking, systems administration, data center management, and internet protocols. Candidate will be responsible for various types of network infrastructure in supporting the performance and stability of network data collection. Successful candidates will be able to apply their expertise in the research, design, and implementation of cutting-edge and mission critical network systems used to detect and mitigate sophisticated threats facing Verizon, and our customers. The Network Intelligence infrastructure consists of several very large scale compute and storage clusters that are used to analyze petabyte scale network and security event data sets for anomalous and malicious network activity.

 

Successful candidates will have responsibility for a number of the following areas based on the unique expertise that they bring to the project.

 

* Perform necessary assessments, designs, plans, and implementations to sustain a high performance network and computing environment.

* Perform necessary provisioning and change management configurations on network devices and systems.

* Maintain vendor relations to ensure network infrastructure devices are at current releases, meet design objectives, and drive technical issues to resolution.

* Conduct daily break-fix maintenance activities.

* Develop and execute automation scripts for routine repetitive tasks on network devices and systems.

* Perform necessary cabling and racking of network and systems equipment within the network data centers.

* Contribute to conducting research focused on the detection of tools and tactics used by modern and emerging threat actors. Use cyber intelligence information collected from multiple sources to understand the threat landscape to drive mitigating change to protect Verizon.

 



Qualifications

* Extensive understanding of networking (especially Internet related protocols), and network and information security.

* 5 or more years of hands on experience working with network devices such as routers, switches, load balancers, and firewalls.

* 5 or more years of hands on systems administration experience

* Experience developing in a variety of programming languages, including three to five years of Java, C and a dynamic language such as Python, Ruby or Perl.

* Knowledge of network-based, system-level, and application layer attacks and mitigation methods.

* Strong oral and written communication skills required for internal and external communication, at a range of technical and executive levels.

* Strong project coordination skills, and the ability to achieve self-directed results.

* Experience with commercial big data analytical tools such as Splunk.

* Experience and understanding of basic relational and non-relational databases.

* UNIX systems engineering expertise with a wide variety of UNIX variants.

* Bachelor Degree preferred.

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

* Membership and involvement within external security communities such as NSP-SEC, Ops-trust, etc.

* Experience building useful web interfaces using JavaScript, and some server side framework such as Ruby on Rails, PHP, or CherryPy is also desired.

* Splunk, Hadoop, Cassandra, or related experience.

* Experience with a variety of leading SQL and NoSQL technologies.

* Knowledge and experience in any of the disciplines of statistics, data visualization, pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, semantic web, or graph analytics are desired.
