Responsibilities

The position is responsible for the management of state & local transaction tax audits including sales & use, gross receipts, local utility, business license and other non-income taxes for multiple Verizon legal entities. The candidate will utilize existing audit experience and knowledge to develop audit strategies and procedures, including statistical sampling, based on the attributes of each legal entity and proactively implement such audit strategies and procedures. This fast paced position will require the management of: communications with government auditors; Information Document Requests responses; data requests from multiple billings, general ledger, accounts payable and customer exemptions systems to timely provide audit data; interaction with Corporate Accounting, IT, Tax Research, and Tax Compliance on taxability positions, explanation of records, correction of errors discovered during audits, creation, maintenance and retrieval of data needed for audits; interaction with Tax Legal on negotiating questionable positions taken by government auditors, as well as, appeals of audit assessments. The position is responsible for developing and updating contingency reserves for assigned audits and communicating such FAS 5 requirements to management. The position may also involve working with external consultants in their pursuit of tax recovery initiatives from reverse audits or taxability reviews.



Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, related field or equivalent experience required.
  • CPA or MS in Taxation is desirable.
  • MBA, J.D. or L.L.M. is a plus.
  • 2+ years transaction tax audit experience required.
  • 2+ years of audit defense for a large corporation required.
  • Understanding of statistical sampling methodologies and use that understanding to proactively work with government auditors at the outset to ensure valid sampling methodologies are performed such that error rates and projections meet an acceptable level of confidence.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliverables with competing timelines is required.
  • The candidate must be highly proficient with data analysis, have a strategic emphasis and strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and communication skills (verbal and written) are required.
  • Must be comfortable working independently as well as be a team player.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and Sharepoint and the ability to analyze and produce audit workpapers is required.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate all audit issues (i.e., audit methodology, data extracts, reconciliations, FAS 5 issues, risk mitigation, and tax law) to upper management.
  • Must have an understanding of tax audit reserves, accruals and the management of the reserves.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with reverse audits and managed audits is desired.
  • Previous exposure to PeopleSoft or SAP is a plus.
