Responsibilities

The System Performance Engineer is responsible for the network performance and optimization of the regional Voice and Data networks.

The job responsibilities include:

- Provide leadership and technical direction to the to the System Performance team.

-Mentor and coach engineers on the team on new technologies, in-depth troubleshooting, performance improvement techniques, and training/improving skill set of engineers on the team and throughout the region.

-Represent region at VzW national meetings and forums.

-Lead and coordinate large project implementation.

-Lead ad-hoc trials aimed at improving LTE and VoLTE performance.

-Effectively communicate findings/project status in formal and informal settings (example: 1 on 1 peer explanations and executive management level presentations).

- Readily sees processes or technical issues that need to be improved without prompting or coaching from management. (example: improve tools capabilities for LTE and VoLTE performance, activation processes, new search ring processes, etc)

- Proactively monitor and meet System Performance goals including Ineffective Attempts (IA) and Lost Calls (LC) in voice networks, Failed Connection Attempts (FCA) and Dropped Connections (DC) in EVDO, and RRC Set Up Failures and Bearer Drops in LTE networks. Develop and implement plans to improve the performance goals.

- Provide subject matter expertise for LTE, 3G1X and EVDO data issues in the region including attending region and area calls/meetings. Provide network performance feedback and status to management teams.

- Perform all RF Performance activities required to support the network build program (new cells, EVDO, CDMA and LTE carrier additions etc).

- Analyze baseline, Nielsen, RootMetrics results and implement solutions for improving those results.

- Monitor network performance (using SMS alerts, Real Time Tools, Irisview, Netscout, etc. stats reports) and respond to system problems. Implement corrective actions in a timely manner.

- Troubleshoot system problems such as drop calls, dropped connections, handoff failures, failed originations, and interference issues.

- Troubleshoot and resolve customer complaints.

- Conduct drive testing, analyze drive data results and monitor stats for new site integration, system optimization, and activation.

- Identify areas that require coverage improvement and release search rings.

- Coordinate with RF Engineering in designing and deploying channel elements and carrier additions to prevent system blocking and support network growth. Support adding network equipment and performance monitoring for special events.

- Review all aspects of job functions and recommend new procedures, programs, or test tools to enable greater job productivity.

- Interface with project manager, real estate, construction, switch/field operations, engineering, sales, marketing, finance and legal to assure that Verizon Wireless’s network quality and financial objectives are met.

- Perform monthly store visits for assigned offices and record feedback in DB.



Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is required.

- Minimum 2 years of experience in Data networks engineering and performance.

- Minimum 5 years of experience in RF Engineering, RF system design or RF system performance.

- Minimum 10 years of experience in the cellular or telecommunications industry.

- Excellent problem solving, analytical and organizational skills demonstrated positive, pro-active leadership abilities.

- Advanced technical proficiency and demonstrated ability as the “go to” person for particularly difficult troubleshooting assignments.

- Understanding of CDMA, 3G-1X, EVDO and LTE technologies.

- Familiarity with Alcatel-Lucent cell site hardware, switch, and various subscriber equipment, preferred.

- Advanced level of voice and data call processing (originations, handoffs, etc).

- Advanced level of data networking (switching/routing, TCP/IP) knowledge. This includes the use of the tools to analyze performance on these (Wireshark, Irisview, Netscout, etc) networks.

- Familiarity with RF data collection/analysis tools and RF test equipment (e.g. DataPro, Actix, Windcatcher, frequency scanners, spectrum analyzers).

- Understanding of interference detection and correction techniques.

- Understanding of antenna characteristics and antenna system design/selection.

- Must be detail oriented and able to follow up through to completion on all assignments/projects/deadlines. Assume ownerships for decisions and results.

- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

- Flexibility with work hours, as some night or weekend works will be required.

- A valid driver's license is required.
