Responsibilities

General Description:

The role is a combination of the Service asset and Configuration Management (SACM) and the Release & Deployment Management role. It is to ensure the goals of the Service asset and Configuration Management (SACM) & Release Deployment process are achieved.

Firstly within the SACM role to ensure that the assets required to deliver services are properly controlled, and that accurate and reliable information about those assets is available when and where it is needed. This information includes details of how the assets have been configured and the relationships between assets. SACM ensures that Configuration Items (CI’s) are identified, baselined and maintained and that changes to them are controlled. Internally a closed relationship to Change Management is important to follow-up on changes and externally CI’s and service assets are controlled e.g. shared assets.

Secondly within the Release and Deployment Role to plan, schedule and control the built, test and deployment of releases, and deliver new functionality required by the business while protecting the integrity of existing services. Primarily this role is responsible for scheduling, managing, enhancements and maintenance activity. The role also ensures proper coordination with the development groups ensuring that the infrastructure is available for timely implementation of software (IOS/QOS) releases as well as coordination with other software enhancements and maintenance. Issues of new releases must be closely coordinated with customers and users as well as IT operating personnel. The varying expectations must be skilfully managed in order to avoid potential friction following introduction. The acceptance criteria for the releases are defined on a joint basis. Authorization from the Change Advisory Board for release for the production rollout is only given after testing has been successfully concluded. By contrast to the change management which is geared towards controlling and monitoring the changes, the release management concentrates on their implementation.
