Responsibilities

  • The Technician – Cells, Transport is responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of a large number of network elements and the associated peripheral equipment, and outside plant cable in support of the MSC (Mobile Switching Centers) POP sites, and Cell sites in the greater Kansas area.
  •  Duties include coordinating installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities (GigE, 10GigE, 100GigE, VLAN Routes, OC192, T3, & T1); troubleshooting, upgrading, and maintaining the equipment that the transport network is comprised of, to include Fujitsu 9500, 4500, 4100, 2400, and CDS systems as well as other multiplexor equipment; updating logs with site-specific information; and composing clear and concise reports for system documentation.
  • The Technician – Cells, Transport is expected to perform his/her duties with minimum supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled.
  • Performs preventative and remedial maintenance on transport equipment in DWDM, SONET and Ethernet transport layers.  Maintains the Point of Presence (POP) sites containing the equipment and in some areas, the fiber optic cable that the systems use for connectivity.  This technician is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the owned POP sites to include shelter, HVAC, generator, power plant, and outside plant cable maintenance, overseeing contractors as necessary to ensure the continued operation of the site and systems.


Qualifications
  • Minimum Associates degree, Bachelor’s degree preferred, or relevant military experience is required.
  • Minimum 3 year experience plus electronics training in one or more of the following fields:  Ethernet transport and SONET transportation systems.  DWDM and ROADM systems.  IP Networks, Layer 2 switched systems.  CCENT or CCNA a plus.
  • Intermediate training in at least 3 of the following areas:  data communications, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, computer support, project management, and/or power is preferred.
  • General knowledge of DC power plant systems, generator backup systems, and basic AC/DC theory is required for this position.
  • General knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment is required, the use of BERT test sets to perform testing for Ethernet, SONET, and Asynchronous circuits, the use of PMD/CD test sets to characterize fiber optic cable.  The use of OTDR test sets to isolate and repair owned fiber and identify issues for leased fiber.  Knowledge of cable locating is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, to include Outlook, Excel, & Word are required.
