Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the full life cycle of IMS systems engineering.  The responsibility is national in scope as the IMS Core is utilized in every 4G data session. The Systems Engineer is tasked with ensuring reliability via robust systems design, tight integration, creation and trending of demand \ capacity models,  monitoring \ resolution of system performance issues, and benchmarking of new feature releases. 

Systems Design:  Partner with Product Development and Planning teams to create detailed system designs in accordance with internal NNO standards.  Ensure hardware \ software selections meet and \ or exceed all design criteria for each given platform.  Ensure designs have no single points of failure.  Ensure that systems are engineered to meet availability requirements of business defined service tiers.   Evaluate system hardware requirements identifying CPU architecture, memory and disk layouts, I/O interfaces and external storage.  Provide analysis to validate or eliminate vendor selection.

Systems Performance:  Provide feedback and alternate engineering solutions to solve performance and fault tolerance issues. Identify network tuning and optimization opportunities.  Identify I/O optimization criteria for disk volumes inclusive of RAID and \ or any other volume management systems.  Identify the system key performance indicators (KPI’s) prior to commercial launch.   Ensure we are leveraging existing tools or deploying new tools to monitor the KPI’s.  Ensure that alarms are in place when critical thresholds are crossed.  Investigate \ resolve issues that trigger alarms relative to system performance KPI’s. 

Systems Integration:  Work with appropriate VZW (NNO, M.E, NSS, IT, etc) resources to ensure that the approved system design can be integrated into the production networks.  Ensure that appropriate interfaces are in place to integrate with IT provisioning, and billing systems.  Perform alarm integration with appropriate NSS systems to provide platform visibility into the NOC. 

Demand vs. Capacity:  Work with planning and vendor teams to develop and implement subscriber demand models that are utilized for forecasting \ trending of system utilization.  Validate performance and capacity runs in the vendor environment to ensure that the system delivers the service to its rated capacity.  Provide monthly reporting of subscriber demand vs. known capacity.  Trigger growth jobs when trending of demand data crosses pre-defined engineering thresholds.  Alert appropriate cross organization stake holders when trend data is out of alignment with marketing projections.

New feature implementation:  Leverage knowledge of standard software development lifecycle models to work with appropriate stakeholders (PDI, ME, Planning, Ops) in order to ensure a seamless integration of new features into existing platforms.  Software loads that include new feature rollouts must include performance and capacity test results that are validated by the Systems Engineer. 



Qualifications

Minimum Associates degree, relevant military experience, equivalent special electronics training, or equivalent work experience is required.  Bachelor’s Degree in CS, EE, CIS preferred.

3 to 5 years in the following:

UNIX Systems Administration
UNIX Systems Performance Tuning
C / C++ Development
Java Development
Scripting (Bash, Ksh, Perl, TCL, Python)
TCP/IP v4/v6
Common Carrier and Enterprise grade Hardware (Sun/Oracle, x86, HP, IBM)
Data Center Operations
Storage Systems (Arrays and SAN)
Embedded Linux Systems
Common Network Services (DNS, LDAP, NFS, SSH)

Other required skills:

Ability to lead engineering meetings and clearly communicate outcomes
Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
Capable of trouble-shooting customer related issues and providing support to Operations personnel

Additional desired skills:

IMS architecture 3GPP / ITU.
Protocols (DIAMETER, RADIUS, SIP)
DBMS (Database systems)
Network Routing
Firewalls and Load Balancers
