Responsibilities
Provides leadership and subject matter expertise
Manages large complex additions and changes to the Mobile Switching Centers (MSC), using standard and nonstandard processes.
Provides Subject Matter Expertise on all aspects of the data switch engineering.
Acts as a leader of engineers in the work group.
Trains new team members.
Leads multiple complex projects. Expected to lead the most complex and/or high impact projects.
Manages entire projects for network builds, modifying configurations, refining designs, and troubleshooting issues/analyzing problems.
Involved in troubleshooting process, working with operations who contact data engineers for help.
Builds network, configures designs, compiles system performance stats all to grow network ahead of demand.
Responsible for planning, execution and completion of assigned projects.
Typically manages multiple projects at one time.
Manages both internal and external resources.
Interfaces with all levels of management.
Uses independent judgment and discretion to make decisions in the best interest of the business.
Ensures projects stay within budget.
Responsible for the release of contractors who do not meet contractual performance standards.
Provides oversight of the work of Engineers.
Utilizes experience and knowledge/education to perform tasks. This knowledge is customarily acquired through prolonged professional experience within the industry.
Provides advanced skills for analyzing and resolving complex problems.

Operational lead position with a team of 2-3 DBA’s supporting the MySQL and Oracle databases.

  • Troubleshoots issues in a high pressure, high stress environment that impacts millions of subscribers and always goes to CNN and the Wall Street Journal when there are any 4G impacted subscribers; must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with executive management while troubleshooting production outages on a live bridge during all hours of the day and night.
  • Works to build a transparent support environment between vendor, VZW Engineering, VZW Operations and DBA Operations such that any and all items affecting the smooth running of the platform are managed, and to the extent possible, mitigated; running of Operation meetings to support project timelines and reactive/proactive database changes is paramount.
  • Building and Implementing, administering, and maintaining MySQL and ORACLE databases in the Commercial Data Systems (CDS) organization.  Builds and successfully integrates complex, multi-Terabyte OLTP and Data Warehousing databases with minimal supervision.  Ensures optimal database performance through exhaustive pre-service testing and ongoing real-time monitoring. 
  • Maintains database security and enterprise policy guidelines according to best practices.  Recommends new and improved guidelines to ensure high availability and stability
  • Conducts benchmark tests to gauge hardware capacity and meet application capacity requirements.  Documents business and technical requirements.  Creates technically viable, cost-effective system designs and develops customer-focused implementation strategies and Mentors other DBAs in the group.
  • Creates project plans with appropriate updates for those tasks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Performs FOA installations of new database projects.


Qualifications
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or other related degree. 6 plus years of experience in the cellular or telecommunications industry.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.

Minimum supervision over work product. Works independently on routine and non-routine research and reporting functions.

  • Minimum Bachelors degree, relevant military experience, or equivalent work experience is required on a year for year basis. 
  • MySql Cluster/Oracle DBA with 5-10 years of SQL/PL/SQL.  Expertise in MySql Cluster (7.2 preferably otherwise 7.1), MySql Replication, Oracle RMAN, Golden Gate, RAC, ASM, Partitioning.   At least 5 years of MySql/Oracle DBA experience in an enterprise environment supporting all aspects of a MySql/Oracle Database Server with emphasis on 2-tiered and 3-tiered architecture.
  • Strong experience in monitoring and tuning MySql/Oracle databases for optimum performance and assistance in capacity planning of MySql/Oracle database servers.  Deep knowledge about Relational Database design and analysis; extremely proficient in SQL.
  • A minimum of 2 years of MySql/ORACLE  SQL development including package/ procedure/ trigger/ XML development in a multi-user production environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience with the UNIX operating system (preferably Solaris and Linux platforms), shell scripting techniques – Korn Shell, AWK, SED, and 1 year experience with perl scripting preferably.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must possess excellent organization skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize and support multiple concurrent projects with inputs from multiple groups.
  • Able to work independently with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Access. 
  • Understanding of wireless network engineering principles and standards.
  • Any Commercially facing database support would be helpful.
