Employee will be responsible for designing optical transmission systems for the Verizon Business (VzB) Local Access transport network.  This will include completing designs for new optical transport systems, as well as card adds and/or modifications to existing transport systems.  These optical systems support high-bandwidth services for Verizon’s Enterprise customers.  The designs will primarily be for Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexor (ROADM) systems, Optical Add/Drop Multiplexor (OADM) systems, SONET systems, and Building Ethernet Aggregator Services (BEAS) systems.

The employee must use these designs to create System Plans, in the VzB Local Capacity Creation Process (CCP) tool.  The System Plan provides a high-level description of the transport overbuild needed, as well as the detailed parts list of the transport electronics needed.   As part of the ROADM design process, the employee will be responsible for using design tools provided by different ROADM vendors, to validate the operational readiness of the ROADM design.

In order to ensure that the circuit designs created by this team, meet the needs of Verizon’s customers, it will sometimes be necessary to coordinate with the Provisioning, Regional Engineering, Project Management, Operations, and/or Planning groups.  As obstacles surface, or unclear requirements are received, the employee must work with whomever is needed to get help to resolve the situation.  Sometimes the employee will be required to support turn-up issues, or pre-Sales design options, particularly related to ROADM systems.

Other occasional tasks must be supported, such as providing input on transmission equipment forecasts, or providing feedback to vendors on issues or improvements to the design tools.  This employee will also be involved in supporting First Office Application (FOA) projects to integrate new functionality or new technology into the VzB Local transmission network.


College degree and/or military experience is preferred and the candidate must have at least 8-9 years of experience designing, engineering, or turning up SONET transmission equipment.  The candidate must also have an understanding of the difference between a SONET system, and a Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system, such as a ROADM or OADM.

The candidate must also have experience using Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The candidate must have the ability to work fast, and produce a large number of System Plans in a limited timeframe.  The candidate must also be able to process escalations rapidly, while Project Management and/or Sales is pressing for results.  Good communication skills are essential, as are organizational, and problem-solving skills.  Looking for leadership skills and the ability provide technical direction to other groups.  The candidate must also be a self-starter who is able to perform his/her duties with minimal direction.

It would be beneficial to have knowledge of the transmission platforms manufactured by the following vendors:  Fujitsu, Tellabs, Ciena, Overture, and Cisco.  Any experience using DWDM design tools would be very helpful.  Any experience using the CCP tool would also be beneficial.
