Decades of water traffic and pollution have had a significant impact on the river’s ecosystem and especially the oyster population. Restoring oysters to the estuary will have big ecological benefits for the marine life of the river.

    The New York Harbor School’s Billion Oyster Project, through participation with the Clinton Global Initiative, is committed to restoring 1 billion live oysters to New York Harbor by the year 2030. Monitoring equipment will be installed and equipped with Verizon 4G LTE to provide water-quality data in real time for analysis by the Harbor School students who will grow oysters; monitor oyster reef biology; plant and monitor oyster reefs; and monitor the deeper part of the harbor.

    Oysters are ecosystem engineers, making a disproportionately positive impact on the biological community surrounding them. Each oyster filters and cleans up to 24 gallons of water per day, protects against storm surge and works to foster ecosystem development. Every student in the Career and Technical Education program will play a role in helping to improve the harbor ecosystem for 8 million people—and in reconnecting all New Yorkers to the water.
