Opting out of DNS Assistance by changing your DNS settings in Windows Vista There are two procedures that you must complete in order to opt out of DNS Assistance:

  1. Find and record your current DNS server settings
  2. Statically Assign your DNS Settings
Follow the detailed steps below to complete each procedure.

Note: Setting the DNS server settings to static will opt out all computers including those connected through a wireless connection.

Find and record your current DNS server settings
  1. Click the Start button on your Windows toolbar located at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Select Network and Sharing Center from the main menu.
  4. Select Manage network connections from the menu on the left.
    A list of network adapters that are installed on your computer displays on the screen.
  5. Right click on the network adapter you want to change, and then select Status.
  6. Click the Details button on the Status screen.
  7. Record the numbers located in the IPv4 DNS Servers field. These numbers represent your current DNS server settings. Figure depicting the IPv4 DNS Servers field
  8. Click Close once you have recorded your current DNS server settings.


Statically Assign your DNS Settings
Note: Windows Vista has added security features such as the User Account Controls. If you encounter the UAC during this operation, select the option that will allow you to continue.
  1. Click the Start button on your Windows toolbar located at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Select Network and Sharing Center from the main menu.
  4. Select Manage network connections from the menu on the left.
    A list of network adapters that are installed on your computer displays on the screen.
  5. Right click on the network adapter you want to change, and then select Properties.
  6. In the This connection uses the following items: field, select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and then click the Properties button.
  7. Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
  8. Enter the DNS server addresses you previously recorded into the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fields.

  9. Replace the last octet of your DNS server with .14 in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fields.
    For example, if your existing DNS address is 123.123.123.12, replace the .12 at the end of the address with .14. The new address for this example would be 123.123.123.14.
  10. Click Ok to save your changes.
