How Can I Protect Myself from Spam?

Don't respond to spam. Some spam messages contain links that promise to remove your email address from a mailing list. However, when you select these links, you prove that your email address works, and the person who sent the message could sell your email address to other spammers.

In addition, read the web site's privacy policy before you provide any personal information. Most web sites explain their policies about how they use your personal information. If a Web site doesn't have a privacy policy or if the privacy policy doesn't explicitly guarantee that your personal information will not be shared, there is a possibility that any information you provide to that site could be sold to spammers or other direct marketers.

You can further reduce the amount of spam in your personal inbox by restricting the use of your personal email address to correspondence with people you know. All other correspondence, such as on-line purchases, should be done using a sub-account. Verizon offers an on-line Flash tutorial for creating sub-accounts and configuring Microsoft Outlook Express.

How do I prevent spam in the future?

Review a web site's privacy policy before providing information about yourself.

The policy outlines how they might use your email address or other personal information that they collect. If a Web site doesn't have a privacy policy or if the policy doesn't explicitly guarantee that your personal information will not be shared, you should assume that any information you provide to that site could be sold to spammers or other direct marketers.

How can Verizon Online help me with spam?

Use Spam Detector to help prevent spam. Spam Detector filters spam before it reaches your Inbox. It is provided at no additional cost by Verizon Online and is automatically enabled when you set up your account during installation. It begins filtering spam as soon as it is installed.

Report spam that reaches your Inbox. If you are using a spam-filtering tool and still receive spam email, please forward the entire message, with full headers displayed, to spamdetector.notcaught@verizon.net.

NOTE: Verizon Online utilizes Spam Blocking technology to filter your email from messages that are considered a security threat. Learn more about Verizon practices relative to the filtering of email sent to Verizon.net email customers.
