Responsibilities

This is a Sr. Oracle DBA in our Engineering Department

The Commercial Data Systems organization owns and operates multiple systems that run customer facing applications and champions the customer experience for services that run on those systems. The Principal Engineer ensures for those services that specific VZW service key performance indicators (KPIs) are established and that all relevant National Network Operations (NNO) systems are measured, monitored and reported against that baseline. Any gradual system degradation (either primarily due to equipment/application malfunction or secondarily as an indication of capacity issues) needs to be observed and corrected.

The Principal Database Engineer is primarily responsible for end-to-end system and service performance within the NNO organization. This includes services such as Visual Voicemail, Ubicell, BREW, PTT, ASP, etc… and all relevant components and may include certain adjunct network elements that are under the NNO’s realm of control (e.g. servers, load balancers, certain routers, switches, firewalls, etc…). The team also provides assistance to the regions and HQ for any ambiguous performance issues that may span several departments’ responsibility.

The primary tasks of the Principal engineer are:

  • VZW subject matter expert on end to end service monitoring and all performance metrics relating (but not limited) to the following commercial services: VVM, Ubicell, BREW, PTT, ASP (etc.)
  • Strong focus and analyzing, tuning and repairing complex application and system problems related to Oracle Databases.
  • Interface with other VZW organizations and/or vendors to organize or create standard Database KPI monitoring and end to end performance reporting solutions for commercial VZW services.
  • Leads implementation of short-term and directional performance reporting and monitoring solutions for VZW services specifically in the area of Databases such as Oracle
  • Leads design of end to end performance reporting and monitoring solutions on VZW services.
  • Leads multi-organizational performance degradation investigations (and outage recovery).
  • Leads performance initiatives for services across all VZW organizations.
  • Regularly monitors trends of performance KPIs for several services.
  • Investigate and communicate negative trend changes of KPIs to peers, other organizations and management and takes action as required.
  • Prepare, review and distribute regular and periodic reporting.
  • Provide recommendations on design and implementation of additional reporting and monitoring methods/metrics for one or more of the VZW commercial services.
  • Trains teammates and other organizations on performance skills relative to their specialty services.
