Responsibilities

 

Optimizes the network using traditional means.

Investigates and resolves customer complaints regarding service.

Works on customer complaints and trouble tickets by examining/interpreting performance metrics (i.e. dropped calls, throughput rates) and data to determine what issues are most impactful.

Typically addresses 6-12 issues per day—several times per week must conduct drive testing/field visits to resolve customer complaints and improve areas of troubleshooting.
Configures systems and adds new equipment to network.

Turns on new cell sites, making sure site is properly integrated into network and optimized for peak performance.

Interfaces with all levels of management.

Collaborates with other Network groups, (e.g., real estate, RF design, system performance, construction, etc.).

Typically manages multiple projects at a time.

Uses traditional means of finding and resolving system issues.

Utilizes multiple tools to optimize system performance.

 

***  The responsiblities below are the primary responsiblities for this Engineer - Data System Performance role ***

Responsible for determining, developing, and configuring best methods to capture and analyze data performance, from end (user device) to end (application server).  This includes managing key performance indicators (KPIs) reported by network nodes; as well as determining and developing methods to report and analyze performance of services and applications that reflect actual customer perception of data network, which are not covered by existing KPIs.  This work would lead to identifying and isolating resolution of network issues at various network components, including but not limited to, the end user device, regionally managed IP network platforms, ISP and/or IMS Core components. This would relate to any data session/call flow, including EVDO, LTE, VoLTE and rich communication services.

Also responsible for development of tools, reports, and alerting methods of network metrics, degradation, capacity thresholds, and any potentially negative or unusual trends.

Identifying, troubleshooting, resolving and improving data performance by analyzing complex data performance issues.  Requires a high knowledge and understanding of the following protocols and platforms: TCP/IP, BGP, SIP, OSPF, LAN/WAN, MPLS routers, gateways, firewalls etc.  A firm understanding of call/session flow through the system is also essential.  Must be able to capture, read and understand packet messaging and decode files.  Any issues would require follow up with additional testing to ensure that issue is resolved/optimized, and monitor for continued correct operation/optimization.  Determine options to improve performance metrics, i.e. capacity, throughput, response time (time to first byte), latency, jitter, etc..  Establish and maintain clear communication methods with HQ, Area and other regional data performance teams.  Work with them to gain knowledge of upcoming events, impacts discovered in other markets, and lessons learned.

Developing reports and alerts, relevant to various Engineering teams, of network data performance. Provide trending, looking for degradation or improvements in the network, analyzing performance of network elements to determine if changes (software or hardware changes) within the network have improved or adversely effected performance. Changes can happen at the local, regional and HQ levels that have expected or unexpected impacts.  Reports and alerts should offer improved time to isolation and resolution of either local or large scale impacts.  Must maintain close working relationships with Area IP Performance, NNO, DSO, HQ Device Evolution/Testing teams, IMS Core and Security teams.  Act as upper level support to Operations and System Performance teams for escalated and/or widespread, non-site specific problem reports and network issues.

Developing and/or managing data performance tools and procedures that allow for capture, analysis and alerting of network metrics.  Have experience with database and computer programming, preferably PHP, HTML, SQL, JAVA.  Maintain strong communication with NSS team for VZW related tools, and third-party vendors.  Work closely with Area, NSS and vendors to provide feedback and enhancement suggestions.  Develop diagrams and documentation as learning and reference material for other teams/departments

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other related degree. Master’s degree a plus. 2-5 years of experience in the cellular or telecommunications’ industry.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.

Strong analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.

Strong troubleshooting skills.

Strong problem solving abilities.

Moderate to minimum supervision over work product. Works independently on routine research and reporting functions.

Demonstrated project management skills.

Required - drivers license and good driving record.

 

Strong Wireless data network background and a clear understanding of TCP/IP call flow,  Wireshark trace, TCP dump etc.

Experience with DataPro, Iris View

Strong understanding of 4G and 3G data call flow through core data elements, PDNS, MME, XGW, PGW and IMS.

Experience in capturing and understanding PGW/PDSN logs.

CCNA certification is a plus
