Principal Engineer Systems Performance provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise in the South Georgia area and across the region to identify and resolve system performance related network issues, and also in the deployment of network initiatives. Has the capability to manage complex projects across multiple networks. Possesses expert knowledge of the wireless network, including the RAN and Core.  Takes ownership of network projects, identifies and forges new processes to optimize network performance. Supports, researches and follows through until resolution, by bringing necessary groups together to solve network system performance related matters. Typically manages several projects at a time with no supervision. Takes the lead in implementing and supporting implementation of new technologies and system enhancements for a large geographic area. Establishes good professional working relationships within, and across, various VZW groups at all levels. Overall, thorough understanding of complete RAN network and associated components along with the various vendor technologies.

•Proactively looks for areas to improve overall network performance. Finds and resolves system issues on the network by utilizing traditional and non-traditional means.
•Ability to quickly respond to critical service impacting issues with intuitive out-of-the-box ideas and solutions
•Prioritizes multiple high-visibility projects and drives decisions and resolutions for unique problems that may not have existing/complete solutions
•Typically addresses 6-12 complex network issues per day—several times per week conducts drive testing which includes field visits to better resolve customer complaints.
•Interacts with cross functional teams such as National Network Operations (NNO) groups, NRB, Planning, Maintenance Engineering, Real Estate, Transport, Area, HQ, RF Design and other organizations to deploy and optimize components for best efficiency and reliability.
•Takes the lead on coordination and implementation of the most complex network directives. Called upon to take lead in investigating Root Metrics/Baseline/Nielsen
•Conduct ongoing system performance monitoring to ensure that platforms continue to perform as designed
•Creates pre and post cell site/carrier add templates and checklists for LTE & CDMA, also making sure site/carriers are properly integrated into network and optimized for peak performance.
•Works with capacity engineering for monitoring and trending of capacity to ensure the network meets performance needs.
•Attends various HQ technical calls and presents technical summary to leadership team.
•Proactively improves the network LTE, 1x & EVDO metrics. Works with data engineering on improving data core network metrics.
•Provides subject matter expertise. Helps train new team members. Produces and shares presentations on various network issues and resolutions.

•Interfaces with Sales teams and customers to resolve issues: Resolves internal and external customer-specific data service problems (NPS surveys, trouble tickets, etc). Interacts with Sales on voice and data issues for System Performance. Attempts to duplicate the customer experience,
troubleshoot why the system or customer equipment is responding in that manner, resolves issues and follows up with customer for satisfaction. Follows up with other engineers/managers to communicate the resolution. May work directly with the customer if the situation warrants.  


  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Master degree is a plus.
  • Experience in RF Design is a plus.
  •  A minimum of 5 years of Experience in system optimization for CDMA, EVDO and LTE for Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, or Motorola end-to-end wireless network architecture, KPIs, and parameters.  Ericsson LTE experience is preferred.  Expert level understanding of: LTE, EVDO, CDMA2000-1X air interfaces.
  • LTE network implementation (antenna verifications, drive testing, throughput testing, shake downs, system tuning, and problem resolution) is a plus.
  • Advanced skill set at common suite of performance tools including but not limited to RTT, e-health, Irisview, ALPT, Chicago web, Mars, SAM, Agilent Access CDMA, Windcatcher, NLT, Zite/SSAT, Mapinfo, Geoplan. Also, familiarity with a network optimization tool such as ns, Newfield Go optimizer, etc.
  • Expert level understanding of packet data networks analysis concepts. Including knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite, knowledge of TCP/IP (IPv4 and IPv6) algorithms such as slow start, congestion control algorithm, etc… and knowledge of IP measurement tools such as ping, traceroute, pathchar, snoop & tcpdump. Understanding of Routing protocols  RIP, OSPF, BGP & SIP. Advanced knowledge of WireShark is required.
  • Must have the ability to differentiate and diagnose RAN and CORE related problems; understanding of Systems Engineering aspects related to RAN & proficiency in Core level call flow analysis. IMS understanding is a plus.
  • Experience with parameter optimization, testing and statistical analysis is Required.
  • Excellent understanding of core network including but not limited to PDSN, CSR router, WDN router, Aggregate Router, AAA, HSS, MME, SGW, PGW, IMS, 7750 and Cisco 9K, 10K & 1K routers..
  • Knowledge of one scripting language such as perl or visual basic is required.
  • Wireless vendor feature or equipment FOA or deployment experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in office computer applications: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access
  • Excellent analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills (Verbal & Written).
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
