This position is responsible for the Payroll processing activities relating to Payroll Tax associated with an employee’s payroll payment. The specific responsibilities includes special tax, processing for executives and specific employee payment that require special handling, Annual Tax processes such as W-2s, 1099 & W-2C, research for Internal and Jurisdictional Audits and Assessments. This position will require interaction with Federal, State and Local jurisdictions. This position will support and rotate assignments within Payroll Operations. Position performs a variety of activities in support of the functional processes, programs and/or services. Work may include compiling and analyzing data, creating reports, providing information regarding function specific policies; tracking of processes & activities. In addition, may be involved in smaller projects or phases of a larger project.


This position, in addition to the other responsibilities identified above is responsible for supporting and providing internal customer support through various Customer Service channels, which makes up 30 – 35% of this position’s job requirements. Customer Service is offered through telephone (ACD), email and live chat with Verizon employees in response to inquiries about their pay and related time reporting issues. The candidate must have intimate knowledge and experience of customer service, be able to express empathy, and speak clearly and concisely, with both a polite and friendly attitude at all times, in both verbal and written communications. Service Level Objectives are set and monitored with this position. The candidate must be able to manage support of these inquires in parallel with their other duties.

Scope of responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


Specific Responsibilities

  • Special Tax Processing:
    • ADP Fallout and Suspense research and updating
    • New York state split calculations
    • Process tax refunds and collections associated with system issues. (Defects or Work Request)
    • Weekly Stock Option, Monthly Tuition and Quarterly Relocation files
    • Process daily Tax and Wage Adjustment
    • Monthly SSA verification file
    • Update Tax Locations as requested
    • Successorship Transfers – including issuing SSG identification number and IRS audit letters
  • Annual Tax Process:
    • W-2 balancing, 1099 processing and create W-2C
    • Create W-2 breakdowns upon request
  • Assist with data research for audits and ADP and PeopleSoft Tax Updates
  • Investigation and respond to Federal and State Assessments and Account Reconciliations inquiries
  • Support payroll tax projects that affect employee payroll tax information including updates required by changes in payroll tax law, system issues, employee transfers etc.
  • Produces accurate and effective information using simple queries and reporting tools (e.g., minimal table joins and conditional clauses needed).
  • Works to support the team as assigned, enabling the business through technology enhancements.
  • Performs detailed verification, review and preparation of payroll updates as required from vendor interface files, or manual updates. Defined processing timeline schedules must be achieved to ensure the timely and accurate recording of all employee transactions.
  • Supports all customer service channel SLA’s, activities and key contact to ensure regular updates are maintained as it relates to processes, changes and/or announcements to assist in maintaining up-to-date information available to both customers and staff.
  • Focuses on implementing standardized and simplified processes
  • Seeks out continuous process efficiencies or improvements
  • Support activities in support of testing changes impacting transactional processing that are the result of system upgrades, enhancements or changes brought about from policy, processing changes, vendor or legal review.
  • Interact within the Payroll Operations Support and Control teams to discuss change enhancements to existing system processes.
  • Supports internal and external audit compliance.
  • Understands the end-to-end functional processes as well as how the functional processes integrate with the overall end-to-end payroll processes.
  • Other administrative duties, as required

General Responsibilities

  • Generally works under existing standards and procedures; may require some interpretation. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action; works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • General responsibilities to perform employee transactional for payroll tax refunds and collections.
  • Provides assistance in developing process documentation as well as content for the virtual agent.
  • Provide support to Payroll Integration team as required relating to project development testing efforts.
  • Ability to identify and communicate process improvements as identified in the normal performance of daily functional activities.
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and basic understanding of organizational industry standards specific internal control concepts and principles.
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of relevant specific applications and processing tools.
  • Responsible for maintaining good working relationship with stakeholder groups, and understanding of their strategic initiatives and goals. Work with Payroll management to help drive standardization where applicable.



Skills Required

  • Experience with PeopleSoft HRMS and/or Payroll processing responsibilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, including Excel
  • General understanding of required compliance with legal, regulatory, and financial requirements governing functional tasks and activities
  • Finance Operations such as Payroll experience desirable
  • Experience with end to end payroll processing requirements
  • Results oriented, strong sense of urgency, proactive
  • Ability to manage multiple functions simultaneously
  • Good organizational, time management and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi task, support day to day activities while managing projects and inquiries from stakeholders

  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in HRMS/Payroll Processing/Tax Processing
  • Education – Bachelor or Associate Degree
  • Professional Certification desired, i.e. Certified Payroll Professional Certification or FPC.
  • 1+ years Customer Service experience
