Responsibilities

SUMMARY:

The Senior Network Architect will provide architectural recommendations and requirements, reference designs for evolving Verizon’s PON system. This includes developing technical requirements, economic analysis for the PON network to meet new and legacy consumer and business services. This would include Wireless Backhaul, EPL, SES for Business Access as well as evolving the platform to support new services going forward. The candidate will work with our present vendors and develop the plans to evolve these platforms to support these services.   You will be responsible for:

  • Providing leadership, detailed analysis and corrective plans for PON system level issues on the Optical Line Terminal ( OLT) and Optical Node Terminal) ONT as they occur in the field
  • Guiding Access platforms to their First Office Application (FOA) and addressing platform design/architectural issues as they arise. This involves defining the requirements, scheduling them with the vendors as well as working with internal clients through to FOA and beyond
  • Developing broadband access network architecture/designs and evolution plans including detailed design configuration for various PON vendor platforms to handle higher speed services.
  • Work with IT/OSS architects to provide architectural guidance and provisioning and configuration guidelines for new services/network features
  • Performing technical and economic analyses as needed to continue to evolve BPON, GPON and NG-PON/WDM technologies as needed - for example support deployment for FTTH in business and or residential areas
  • Supporting prototyping and trial activities for broadband network access technologies
  • Supporting internal clients (Marketing, Platform Development, Planning and Engineering, Sourcing) in technology assessment, product selection, and deployment activities

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or other area relating to Information Technology preferred
  • Must have 3 - 5 yrs. experience in developing and deploying IP, Ethernet packet networks including:
    • IP Networking including MPLS, QoS, DiffServ, VoIP
    • CAC and related bandwidth management for hybrid IP and ATM networks
    • IP Addressing (IPv4, working knowledge of IPv6)
    • Working knowledge of RTP, SIP, H.248, IP Video
    • ATM Traffic Management (including ATM policing, shaping, QoS classes)
  • Extensive knowledge of Ethernet bridging, PPP, PPPoE, Radius, and DHCP in a broadband access/edge router (BRAS) context
  • Extensive knowledge of broadband wireline access technologies including passive optical networks (PON), TWDM and WDM
  • Ability to quickly grasp detailed component level understanding of various network elements and systems
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and ability to perform economic analyses.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter able to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse technical team. Strong oral presentation and writing skills. Confident and flexible, able to identify critical tasks and milestones and to make progress on multiple simultaneous tasks.

 

DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with fiber technologies like GPON, XGPON1, NG-PON2 or WDM technologies
  • Experience tackling complex Technical and Business issues and developing a plan or action and executing it
  • Network Planning experience and launching platform to FOA
  • Experience in working with/managing Packet network solution providers
  • Working knowledge of telephone switching and transmission networks
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Network Management.
    • VoIP/Softswitch architecture
  • Analog and digital video transport and distribution networks
  • Knowledge of network modeling, simulation, and design analysis
  • Comfortable with the ambiguity and uncertainty of technology
  • Some hands-on experience with packet networking equipment (lab environment included)
  • Experience with troubleshooting packet networks (data, voice), or experience working with Network Operations for packet networks evolution
  • Knowledge of industry standards and RFCs for FTTP, IP and MPLS technologies and innovation
