Responsibilities

Verizon builds a cost effective, reliable, and scalable network infrastructure in support of mobile, consumer and enterprise business segments.

This individual contributor position will develop plans that evolve the voice and VoIP network infrastructure in support of new products, network optimization opportunities, new technology introduction, and life cycle management.

This job will focus on the international portions of the Verizon network but the position will also engage in domestic US project work.

The job will evolve Verizon’s network infrastructure in support of not only voice and VoIP applications but also video, conferencing, collaboration, and unified communication solutions. Work will require development of multi-year network infrastructure evolution plans, technology evaluations and introductions, business analysis, vendor management, and life cycle management of critical network infrastructures.

The position will require the ability to drive projects work from conception through deployment into the production network. Project activities will include: develop network designs, coordinate lab certification activities, develop back office systems requirements, work across teams to get network infrastructure deployed and accepted into production, and provide required design support throughout the life cycle of the infrastructure.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide in region leadership for infrastructure planning work activities and projects
  • Work as part of a global infrastructure planning team that brings standardization of equipment, approach, design, deployments, and process to Verizon’s global network.
  • Drive platform integration to simplify Verizon’s network infrastructure.
  • Monitor and evaluate advances in technology, competitors, industry standards, and disruptive influences. Drive appropriate change into Verizon’s infrastructure.
  • Review utilization, growth trends, forecasts, and network performance to recommend and drive new voice technology deployments and establish guidelines for minimizing reliance on aging technology.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to satisfy product/service functionality needs while also ensuring network reliability, availability, performance and scalability requirements are addressed.
  • Identify network optimization and standardization opportunities as well as opportunities to address network management challenges, and recommend infrastructure design solutions.
  • Define alternative design solutions that satisfy requirements, meet cost and schedule constraints, minimize support complexity, and can be standardized.
  • Recommend architecture design for production deployment, providing rationale through design reviews with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Engage vendors as necessary to ensure functional requirements for network evolution are properly developed, production hardware and software issues are resolved, and network design solutions can be implemented.
  • Develop budgets and business justification to support plans.
  • Develop network designs (including templates, configurations, vendor recommendations, lab / introduction plans, infrastructure-based cost-benefit orchestration, and capacity guidelines) for infrastructure components, including First Office Application (FOA)
  • Author lab testing requirements to validate design and performance.
  • Establish IT development requirements necessary to support recommended plan.
  • Drive project execution.
  • Be able to manage work activities across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Establish strong working relationships with Engineering Design, Operations, Translations, Capacity Management, and vendors.
  • Partner with Capacity Management to understand timing requirements for deployment of new technologies needed to support growth demands.
  • Develop call flow designs and improvements for various products.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance Engineering to develop and deploying network solutions for production issues.
  • Host meetings/calls across implementation and support organizations to drive communicate design strategy and drive project progress.
  • Support IP Contact Center (IPCC), Unified Communications & Collaboration as a Service (UCCaaS), Enterprise VoIP, and other products on the Verizon Infrastructure.
  • Develop designs that evolve TDM switch, VoIP gateway, IP comm nodes (router, switch, firewall), SCIP infrastructure, voicemail, audio conferencing, and carrier access solutions.
  • Interface with Verizon wireless and other mobile carriers to develop and improve IP network interconnection design to maximize survivability, support new mobile technologies, and reduce operation costs.
  • Continually monitor traffic trends (such as TDM attrition to IP) and look for opportunities to direct traffic in a way that leverages newer technologies and minimizes dependency on end of life equipment.
  • Act as liaison with various cross functional teams to respond to business needs and drive process improvement.
  • Drive and manage vendors providing products and services used in building Verizon’s network infrastructure.
  • Drive creative solutions such as virtualized solutions

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent industry experience preferred.  Post Grad degree preferred.
  • 10+ years experience in a tier-1 service provider performing network design, network management, capacity planning, provisioning, translations, network operations.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing large-scale, end-to-end telecom network architecture solutions, and driving through network integration.
  • Strong Service / Application/ Infrastructure experience (SBC, Switch, Router, Firewall, IP Media Application) and IP network technology background across a wide variety of products, vendors, and platforms.
  • Knowledge of network protocols (SS7, ISDN, IP, UDP, TCP, DNS, HTTP, SIP, H.323)
  • Extensive understanding of TDM switching, VoIP, and IP network infrastructures.
  • Current knowledge of existing voice technologies, industry trends and emerging technology and impact of the technology on Verizon’s voice business.
  • Demonstrated hands on expertise and configuration development for network elements.
  • Strong hands on experience with designing and implementing media / signaling based services,  products, or network applications.
  • Expertise in acquiring and mining data to conduct detailed analysis and modeling required to develop infrastructure strategy.
  • High competence in development of documents detailing strategy, drivers, costs, and justifications necessary to obtain understanding, support, and funding of recommended plans.  Ability to develop executive level summary material.  Ability to present to executives and customers.
  • Ability and skills to aligning cross functional teams to develop and complete common goals.  Ability to manage and prioritize across multiple complex large scale projects.
