This position, which is in the Backbone Infrastructure Planning team will be responsible for the design and architecture planning for Verizon’s data backbone network. This network provides the IP backbone for Verizon’s wireline services. Focus is to ensure that network architecture will scale to meet the client network’s growth, examine future hardware and software enhancements to evolve the backbone and sustain new services and features.

  • Interact across multiple teams to gather requirements and provide consensus of the design and architecture of the network.
  • Manage vendor to provide technology direction for hardware, software features, and virtualization.
  • Conduct proof of concept testing and provide lab requirements definition and test plans.
  • Provide documentation for other teams to follow the design and architecture plans for the network.


Extensive understanding of IGP routing protocols, MPLS, BGP, and Multi-cast

Extensive understanding of capabilities of Cisco, Juniper, and ALU network equipment

Problem solving through strong technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills

Documentation and presentation skills ranging from concise plans to executive summaries

Ability to work with minimal supervision on several projects at once


Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications or equivalent preferred

At least one active technical certification such as CCNP or higher, or JNCIP or higher

Five (5) years of experience in IP network planning, design, engineering, or operations

Three (3) years of experience in leading or participating in large scale projects involving cross functional teams

Ability to manage external vendors and partners
