The Switch Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of switching, data communications, and peripheral equipment associated with the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO). The incumbant will be responsible for managing projects, monitoring the network, and executing network changes on multiple data and telecom platforms.  These networks include, but are not limited to Ericsson LTE elements, Cisco routers and multilayer switches, Alcatel-Lucent Ethernet equipment, Ericsson MTX/BSC and RNC Equipment.

Other duties include:

  • Coordinating installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities (dark fiber, Ethernet, wavelength services, OCn, T3, T1, and DSO)
  • Troubleshooting, upgrading, and administering multiple vendor systems
  • Maintaining system applications
  • Ensuring quality customer service
  • Providing support to a varied user community
  • Updating daily logs with site-specific information
  • Composing clear and concise reports for system documentation
  • Maintains system applications and participates in cross-functional projects
  • Participate in 24/7 on call rotation responding to application alarms and customer requests
  • Troubleshoot external and internal application issues and network connectivity issues.
  • Ability to learn and have working knowledge of MTSO facilities including: Generators, HVAC, AC/DC Power, & Access equipment
  • Routine maintenance & monitoring of Switches, peripherals, -48V DC Power plants and inverters.
  • Responsible for the timely repair and documentation on all Trouble Tickets and CSR’s.

The Switch Technician is expected to perform his/her duties with minimum supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled 


The qualified candidate will be a self-motivated, engaged team player who has demonstrated success collaborating across teams. Must be detail oriented and thorough; possess proven troubleshooting skills and the ability to multitask in a fast paced environment.

Minimum 3 year experience plus electronics training in one or more of the following fields:  telecommunications (cellular or landline) switching systems or experience in LAN/WAN operations and IP connectivity is preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems, stored program control, and power is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of LAN/WAN protocols is required.
  • General knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment is required.
  • Experience and knowledge of transmission facilities (OC48, T3, T1, and DSO) is required.
  • Strong programming and computer skills with emphasis on applications are required.
  • Working Knowledge of Cisco routers
  • Experience and knowledge in managing and troubleshooting fiber optic transmission facilities preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook is required
  • Working knowledge of Unix/HTML

Intermediate training in at least 2 of the following areas:

  • data communications
  • digital communications
  • operating systems and applications
  • telecommunications
  • computer support
  • project management, and/or power
