The System Performance engineer will be a member of a regional team responsible for ensuring reliable and optimal wireless voice and data services in a large service provider core network. These services include, but are not limited to CDMA, EVDO, LTE, and VoLTE. This will be accomplished by routinely using various tools to collect, monitor, manipulate, and report on various KPIs (key performance indicators). Some of these KPIs include packet loss, jitter, latency, server errors, discards, retransmissions, failures, application timeouts, and other performance degrading issues. This position will also be responsible for researching and performing analysis, generating routine and ad-hoc reports on network health, working with other engineers and sharing information, and validating the network performance after system configuration changes, or new features are added, to ensure the highest level of network quality and reliability is maintained.
In addition to the responsibilities above, the position is required to have a working knowledge of IP networks and applicants are expected to have demonstrated experience working with or detailed studying of network protocols such as TCP/IP, IPv6, MPLS, BGP, DNS, DIAMETER, RTP, and SIP. Responsibilities also include being able explain to other engineers and management the performance aspects of these protocols, how they work in the network, and investigate performance issues that may arise.
There also is a high emphasis on using various software tools (Excel, network performance metric databases, network protocol analyzers, scripting/programming) to create reports and perform detailed analysis on them. It will be required to research these network performance metrics to find anomalies or other events of interest, use these systems to perform new hardware and application testing with regards to network performance, troubleshoot network and end-user problems, and help guide and ensure the resolution of those issues, which is essential. Being able to provide report summaries from data that is collected and analyzed from these various testing/research/troubleshooting scenarios is also essential.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering with a computer networking focus, other related degree, or extensive networking experience is required.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Electrical Engineering with a computer networking focus is a plus.
At least 2-5 years of experience in the IP networking or network software/programming, or equivalent detailed undergraduate/graduate degree coursework in IP networking topics, is required.
Demonstrated experience of examining and working with network protocols such as TCP/IP, IPv6, MPLS, BGP, DNS, RTP, or SIP.
Demonstrated experience with, and detailed knowledge of, 3GPP 4G LTE interfaces (S1-MME, S1-U, S5, S6a, S6b, S10, S11, S2a, SGi, Gx, Rf, Gy, etc), network elements (MME, SGW, PGW, HSGW, AAA, HSS, PCRF), and call-flows is highly desirable.
Knowledge of IMS network interfaces, network elements, and call flows is a plus.
Demonstrated experience with the performance analysis and troubleshooting of IP networks using tools like tcpdump, iperf, tcptrace, or other tools such as network protocol analyzers (Wireshark, Netscout, etc.) and/or network reporting systems (IrisView, IBM Cognos. eHealth/Performance Center, SevOne, etc.) is desirable.
Strong analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.
Strong troubleshooting and problem solving abilities, to quickly find solutions to problems where no previous examples or methods may exist, are required.
Wireshark, Netscout, or other protocol analyzer experience is a plus.
Experience with any programming/scripting/web development is a plus.
Self-motivated and the ability to work with moderate to minimal supervision.
Must be able to work independently on routine research and report creation functions, while also collaborating with other teams when necessary, to resolve problems or arrive at solutions.
Demonstrated project management or handling multiple task skills needed.
Occasional night work to support any major projects or initiatives.
Occasional travel to off-site training sessions or meetings as needed.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.
Drivers license and good driving record is required.
