As many businesses have transitioned to a remote work environment, employees everywhere are facing new challenges, including maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
In today’s world, working from home has become a new reality for many due to the unforeseen circumstances brought on by COVID-19. This new norm, however, has come with its share of challenges as families have been quarantining together.
During this time, employees everywhere have used different approaches and strategies to stay productive while working from home. Here are a few best practices to keep you focused, and engaged while maintaining a work-life balance.
1. Create a structured daily routine.
For recruiter Tony C., working remotely on a full-time basis while taking care of his three children has come with its share of challenges. One thing that helps him balance work and home life effectively is sticking to a daily schedule.
“Each night before bed my wife and I discuss our following day's work meetings to allow us to create a schedule for both work and managing our children,” Tony said.
Sticking to a routine can also help you avoid distractions and stay on track with your goals. Tony advises maintaining normal work hours with appropriate breaks throughout the day. These breaks, he says, can help you stay in a motivated mindset.
2. Set daily goals for yourself.
Setting small goals each day helps V Teamer Victoria D. remain productive and motivated. For her, maintaining a strong balance between work and home life plays a major role in staying on track.
“If I finish a task, I reward myself with a few minutes of family fun time. This includes things like being silly with the kids, teaching my dog a new trick, or making a great meal!” she said. “This definitely motivates me to get things done.”
3. Exercise for stress relief.
Staying fit will allow both your mind and body to be relieved of the stress that comes with taking on additional responsibilities at work or home.
On nice days, Tony C. says that getting in a relaxing outdoor walk while taking thoughtful breaths helps him stay motivated. On cold or rainy days, he suggests taking some time to walk around the house or complete a 10-15 minute workout.
4. Use affirmations to keep yourself in a positive mindset.
V Teamer Magela P. has brought some of her best practices from the office to her home using “Affirmation at Work” cards. “I read them while having a cup of coffee and I reflect on the card content to see where I can apply it in my work life,” Magela shares. “It's a nice way to keep myself challenged and motivated while we are quarantined.”
She also keeps a set of affirmation cards for her teenage sons to help them stay motivated as they engage in remote learning.
My ultimate motivator is continuing to perform for an organization that steps up in a time of crisis, from providing strong networks, to programs that help those struggling during the pandemic.
