Verizon repeats as #1 Military Friendly Company

By: Verizon Careers

A look at of some of our Verizon Veterans.

The cover story of the March issue of G.I. Jobs highlights the journey of some of our V Teamers and veterans on their pursuit of something better and how that journey led them to a career with Verizon. Their experiences are just two examples of the more than 10,000 V Teamers who are veterans and demonstrate why we’re ranked as #1 Military Family for two consecutive years.

What it means to be Military Friendly.

The Military Friendly designation is for organizations that have met or surpassed their standard in three out of four areas: Military Friendly Employer, Military Spouse Friendly Employer, Military Friendly Supplier Diversity Program and Military Friendly Brands program.

We don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk.

It’s not just a lot of talk that got us the #1 spot again. Here are a few reasons why we earned this recognition, again.

  • Veterans Advisory Board, an Employee Resource Group, provides ongoing support, recognition and development of our veteran V Teamers from the time they are hired.
  • We host interview and resume workshops for transitioning service members, attend military job fairs and offer an internal networking and mentoring platform called Military Connection.
  • Our Military Career site helps candidates transition from military to civilian life. This site includes a Military Skills Matcher, Military Talent Network, and resume-builder among other resources.
  • A Tuition Assistance Program for those interested in pursuing higher education.

Natalie Perez, Army Reserve veteran, military spouse, V Teamer.

In search of a better life, Natalie enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2001. She joined Verizon in 2007 and quickly appreciated our commitment to veterans. “The flexibility that you are given when it comes to deployment or any military commitment is a great benefit. Having job security is one of the best advantages when you’re working for a company that is Military Friendly®,” she said. She chose not to reenlist to raise her four children and support her husband who was preparing to deploy. As a military spouse, she was able to benefit from our military spouse program. Natalie is quick to recommend Verizon to transitioning service members knowing we’ll have their backs.

Reuel James, Air Force veteran, V Teamer

Reuel joined the Air Force because he wanted a different life from his peers. He thought the military would provide the experience, support and discipline to get him there. His military career as an air transportation specialist provided valuable experience when he was granted the opportunity to work at Verizon as a field operations manager. Reuel shared, “Field operations management has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most challenging positions in the company. In a lot of ways, I suspect that my job description aligns with that of a medium-sized business owner.”

Check out the full story which includes a sit-down with V Teamer Tommy Jones, an Army veteran himself, who runs Verizon’s veterans, military spouse and diversity talent initiatives.
